Abstract
The ability of healthcare providers to meet the needs of immigrants from culturally diverse backgrounds has become increasingly essential as the United States faces the global migration crisis. Culturally diverse immigrant women, especially from areas of the world experiencing conflict, typically lack prenatal care and access to healthcare before coming to the United States, contributing to stillbirths and miscarriages among this population. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore obstetric and neonatal nurses’ experiences of caring for immigrant mothers from culturally diverse backgrounds after perinatal death. Knowledge gained from this study will contribute to a new understanding of culturally sensitive care in this vulnerable population and influence future evidence-based care that impacts transcultural healthcare. Leininger’s culture care diversity and universality theory, which focuses on culturally sensitive care during traumatic medical events, was the theoretical foundation for this qualitative study. Leininger’s theory enabled me to gain firsthand knowledge about nursing experiences when caring for immigrant mothers from culturally diverse backgrounds after perinatal death. The study collected data using a basic qualitative anonymous fill-in-the-blank questionnaire distributed through the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrics, and Neonatal Nurses member email server and collected by SurveyMonkey. The questionnaire had four demographic questions and 10 open-ended questions that aimed to answer the research question about obstetric and neonatal nurses’ experiences of caring for immigrant women from diverse cultural backgrounds after perinatal death. The study sample consisted of 19 obstetric and neonatal nurses with at least 1 year of experience who practiced in an obstetrical or neonatal hospital setting.
