Abstract

Introduction: Locating, selecting, and printing appropriate 3D-printed assistive devices (AD) to meet specific health needs can be overwhelming. To address these challenges, the 3DAdapt app was developed. This study aimed to explore the app’s usability through an occupational therapy (OT) student project that involved delivering 3D-printed AD to older adults.

Methods: Over three sessions, OT students collaborated with older adults to provide customized 3D-printed AD. The app’s usability was assessed using a mixed-methods approach, including the System Usability Scale (SUS; scores ≥ 70 indicate usability). Focus groups with OT students further explored the usability of occupation-focused interventions with their clients. 

Results: Students (n=30) reported the app as usable (SUS mean= 80.42, SD=11.80), whereas older adults (n=14) reported lower usability (SUS mean= 64.64, SD= 30.35). Themes emerged as: (1) 3DAdapt facilitates communication about 3D printing in OT but requires revisions for broader accessibility; (2) the app was easy to use due to its familiarity, convenience, and simplicity, though improvements are needed in search functionality and review posting; and (3) user engagement may rely on initial engagement, awareness, and educational support.

Discussion: While OT students found the app usable, enhancements to accessibility and learning resources could improve adoption among clinicians, thereby optimizing collaboration to support clients who would benefit from AD.
